Research Topics

Geomaterial is a multi-phase mixture composed of soil particle phase, water phase, and air phase. Interactions and microscopic structural changes of the three phases are therefore a key to interpretation and modeling of macroscopic behaviors of geomaterials such as deformation, failure, and groundwater seepage. For the purpose of “Modelling Behaviors of Geomaterial from Micro to Macro”, we are working on the following research topics:

  • Clarification of links between microscopic and macroscopic behaviors of geomaterials through experiments using x-ray microtomography
  • Development of multi-scale and multi-phase analysis methods to predict and evaluate the behaviours of geomaterials

Our research application extends to various geotechnical issues including subsoil behaviors during constructions and designing robust earth structures such as river levees and road embankments against rainfalls and earthquakes.
